A Monitoring Program for Pilots

The HIMS (Human Intervention Motivation Study) Monitoring Program is a specialized drug and alcohol recovery program designed to support pilots, both professional and recreational. HIMS is a three way relationship between the pilot and their union, their employer, and the FAA.  It is a tried and tested program which focuses on rehabilitation, monitoring, and is the fastest path to recertification.  The program provides monitored treatment opportunities while at the same time fulfilling FAA certification criteria.

At the Center for Aviation Medicine, we collaborate with a nationwide network of HIMS trained AMEs, psychiatrists, and neuropsychologists to sponsor and supervise the certification process as well as verify sustained sobriety.  Utilizing our team of HIMS-trained experts, we skillfully evaluate, and monitor pilots diagnosed with substance use disorders.

At the Center, we work hand-in-hand with you to organize your treatment plan while meticulously monitoring and documenting your progress. This includes participating in AA or NA sessions, and undergoing unannounced, random drug and alcohol testing. We also collect reports from your chief pilot, peer pilots, and addiction counselors. Throughout each phase, we provide expert guidance, ensuring you receive the best possible care while verifying your progress and sustained sobriety.

frequently asked Questions

The HIMS (Human Intervention Motivation Study) Program is a specialized drug and alcohol recovery program specifically designed to support professional pilots dealing with substance use disorders. It aims to identify, treat, and safely reintegrate affected pilots back into the cockpit.

The HIMS Monitoring Program is an ongoing, multi-phase process. It involves close collaboration with HIMS Trained AMEs, psychologists, and neuropsychologists. Pilots diagnosed with substance use disorders or disqualifying psychological and psychiatric conditions receive coordinated treatment and continuous monitoring of their progress, including attendance at support group meetings and random drug and alcohol testing.

HIMS Trained AMEs are essential medical professionals who specialize in aeromedical evaluations for pilots in the HIMS Program. They play a crucial role in evaluating the pilot’s fitness-to-fly and coordinating the necessary medical decisions to ensure flight safety.

Pilots can enter the HIMS Program through various means, including formal intervention, DUI reports, referrals from pilot managers, or self-referral. If you believe you may benefit from the program, contact our office to initiate the process.

To get started, you will need a copy of the letter from the FAA indicating the need for a HIMS AME consultation. Additionally, we require a copy of your FAA Airman Medical Record sent directly from the FAA.

The duration of the program may vary depending on individual circumstances and progress. Each case is unique, and our team will tailor the program to meet your specific needs. The HIMS program advances through four phases, from Phase 1 to Phase 4, with each phase lasting between 1 to 2 years.

The HIMS Program is designed to facilitate the safe return of affected pilots to the cockpit after demonstration of fitness-to-fly. However, eligibility for return-to-flying will be subject to evaluation and approval by the FAA.
