FAA Color Vision Test

Contact Us

Effective January 1st, 2025, only specifically designated FAA computer-based color vision screening tests will be acceptable for pilot exams.

The following tests are currently available at Center for Aviation Medicine as part of a routine FAA exam or can be performed independently with a scoring sheet that the airman can provide to their AME.

Waggoner Computerized Color Vision Test

Acceptable Tests:

  • Waggoner CCVT
  • Rabin Cone Test (RCCT) Air Force/Army/Navy/Coast Guard Version
  • City Occupational Colour Assessment & Diagnosis (CAD; AVOT-PRO-US)

Pilots who have taken and passed any of the previously FAA-Approved color vision tests will NOT be required to take any of the new computer-based tests. Only those pilots who are first-time applicants will be required to take and pass one of the 3 computer-based color tests. A computerized grading sheet will be printed out and uploaded to the FAA Medical Certification Division.
Pilots who already hold a 1st or 2nd Class medical certificate and have a LOE (Letter of Evidence) or SODA (having passed OCVT and CV MFT), or Pilots who already hold a 3rd class medical certificate with SODA or LOE and want to keep a 3rd Class DO NOT require retesting with the new computer-based tests.

If unable to pass ANY of the acceptable tests:

The examining AME is required to list the name of the color vision test(s) attempted AND include the scores, issue a 3rd Class medical certificate (if otherwise qualified) and add the limitation “Valid for day visual flight rules (VFR) only.”  If the airman requests an upgrade to 1st or 2nd class, an appeal to the Federal Air Surgeon will be necessary.
